2013 Second Semester-Opening Ceremony Principal’s Talk    October 7th, 2013

○ Good morning, students. It is my great pleasure to see you all after our six-day autumn break. Though it was not long enough like the summer holidays, I hope this break has refreshed you and has prepared you for the latter half of the school year.

○  Twelfth graders, there are only five more months before your graduation from GKA in March next year. Some of you will sit for the final exam to receive your certificate from IBDP in November, and all of you will be very busy studying and preparing to move forward on to higher education both in Japan and abroad. I sincerely wish you all good luck.

○ Tenth graders, who have been to North America on a school trip, must have learned a lot from visiting many interesting places. Though your stay was a short one, I’m sure you’ve benefited from seeing a cross-section of American culture and society.

○ Eighth graders, you are going on a school trip to Kyoto and Nara in mid-October.  You will visit old temples and shrines, and will see a huge statue of Buddha and many historical buildings. Just as the saying goes, “seeing is believing.” So, I would like you to rely on your own sense of appreciation when observing these ancient cultural treasures. My advice to you is that you believe with your own eyes and intuition.

○  Autumnal season has finally arrived.  As you may agree, this season is good both for doing sports and reading books.  Since I often touch upon sports in general when I have a chance to talk to you, today I am going to express what I think about reading books.

○ We are living in a modern age, allowing us to lead a very comfortable life every day. Blessed with convenience and pleasant surroundings, we don’t live with desperate effort. We are able to enjoy a variety of blessings which new technology has provided us with. We tend to take things for granted with a passive attitude without any sense of appreciation.

○ With modern technology, it’s easy for us to become distracted from deeper thought and appreciation. Reading books has a special meaning for us because reading quality books helps us develop a deeper appreciation of life. We need to have positive attitude in order to pursue the joy of reading. We must be dedicated to  reading so that it becomes a daily habit.  To do this, we allot a certain amount of time each day. The benefits of reading are so numerous that I can only mention a few to you today.

○ I am interested in what you think are the good points about reading books? To my mind there seems to be so many good points or advantages in reading which we can share with in our daily life.

① Firstly, reading books helps us gain a wealth of useful knowledge or information, which can benefit our lives.

② Secondly, reading novels can be a thrilling experience as if we were the hero or heroine in the story. Being lost in a story allows our imagination to be completely free.

③ Also, without needing to physically travel to important places like London, Paris or New York, reading, with the aid of photographs, about these places can make us feel like you’re virtually there. I must admit, that you can get a similar effect by surfing the Internet.

④ A good strategy to help develop an avid habit of reading is to choose a special quiet time, each day, for reading. Once you settle down, you can concentrate on the habit of reading. Usually we start reading a book from the first page, however, you are free to start reading on whichever page you like. If you have lots of time, you may be able to read at your own pace.  You can even read the same passage as many times if you like.

⑤ Finding and reading a book that just fits your taste and needs can be very nutritious to your heart, while increasing your vocabulary as well.

⑥ You know we are blessed with a beautiful and massive library here at GKA Secondary campus of over 9,000 books. Isn’t it a gorgeous library?  It would be a great shame if you were not to make full use of such a great library? The library is yours to enjoy and you are always welcome. Our librarian, Ms. Watanabe is always waiting for you.

⑦  We are now living in an age of information technology and are surrounded with innumerable digital devises.  We are able to easily rely on the internet or computerized equipment, however, the touch of paper of books can have a soothing effect on our mind. I don’t know the reason why, but it might have to do with paper’s soft natural touch. The more the world becomes computerized, the more necessary it is that we remain connected to our senses. Reading a conventional style book gives our senses comfort. Don’t you think?

 ○ Today I treated the habit of reading books as a main topic, however, it doesn’t mean that I am not interested in other matters.  On the contrary, the next few months are very good weather for enjoying sports and of course appreciating art or music as is often well suited for the autumn season.

○ And above all, I should not forget to remind you of the importance of your studies.  My simple but sincere advice is that all students at GKA will lead a full school life during the latter half of the school year.  In order to be successful next semester you simply need to concentrate on each daily lesson and extracurricular activities.  Good luck to you. Thanks for your attention.
