Principal’s Speech at Junior High Completion Ceremony
March 23, 2018

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and all of you who have kindly come here for the GKA Junior High completion ceremony. I would like to extend my hearty thanks to each one of you for joining us today. At this time of the year, we look forward to seeing the cherry blossoms in full bloom. I imagine all the parents here are filled with great joy as they look back on the tremendous effort put into educating their children -- bringing them to this delightful day.
I have just presented diplomas to the GKA junior high school students standing here for having completed Junior High. You are getting ready to enter a new stage in your lives. Three years have passed since you entered this campus, and now you look amazingly much more mature and grown-up. I am blessed to have spent a lot of time on this campus, observing all of you not only when you were studying but also as you were taking part in a wide variety of school events and extra-curricular activities.
I would like to say a few words as you face this important turning point in your lives. You haven’t all chosen the same path, but I wish you all good luck in whatever awaits you.
Firstly, I want you to try your best to know yourselves, understand and make much of your own individual identity. Everybody has individual strengths as well as weaknesses. Everybody has his or her own interests in a variety of pursuits, opportunities, sights and sounds. You are sure to find your daily lives extremely interesting in many different ways. Each of you is unique and different. By earnestly thinking about yourself, you will eventually come to know what career or dream you should pursue in the future.
Secondly, I want you to be confident and take pride in yourselves. You have already had the experience of English immersion for nine years at GKA. The education you have received here places high priority on critical thinking. This has been a unique educational experience that will definitely be a great asset to each and every one of you. Many exciting events and extra-curricular activities outside your daily lessons have made your school life even more fulfilling. These things have all contributed to making you what you are today. You have every right and reason to be confident and proud as you boldly face the future.
Thirdly, in the years to come, I would like you to appreciate the deeper meaning of your lives. As is often the case in life, nothing stays the same forever. Tough times may follow peaceful moments. Dramatic events may suddenly occur in the course of long tedious routines. In all situations, I want you to be positive, proactive and optimistic. Flexibility and stubbornness seem to be opposing attributes. However, both will definitely play important roles when it comes to leading a fulfilling life.
I would like to introduce two examples of encouraging and inspiring words uttered by distinguished historical figures. Sir Winston Churchill, a British politician who was Prime Minister during  World War II, said, “Kites rise highest against the wind ? not with it.” The other phrase I would like to introduce to you is by Ralph Waldo Emerson, a U.S. poet and writer who had great influence on the religious and philosophical thought of his time. “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.”
Finally, I would like to express our deepest thanks to our parents. We wish to express our deepest thanks for your many contributions and cooperation with all of the revolutionary educational practices you have witnessed here at GKA. We wish all parents and students, health and happiness in the years to come, especially to our students as they finish their careers at Junior High on this beautiful day in early spring. May your futures be bright, happy and fulfilling.
