We held a nursing career exploration workshop for interested students, inviting two practicing nurses as guest speakers. This program is organized by the Gunma Nursing Association, which provides opportunities for students at schools across Gunma Prefecture to hear directly from nursing professionals.
The workshop covered the roles and responsibilities of nurses, the rewards of the profession, qualifications and educational pathways to becoming a nurse, Basic Life Support (BLS) practical training, and a Q&A session. The first half consisted of a lecture, followed by hands-on activities in the second half.
Through this opportunity to hear directly from practicing nurses, students were able to reflect on their own future career paths and gain a deeper understanding of how our everyday lives are supported by the work of many people. After the workshop, several students were also seen approaching the guest speakers individually to ask for advice, making it a particularly meaningful experience.
Below are excerpts from students’ reflections, along with photos from the day. We hope you enjoy reading them.
Student Reflections
1.
Before attending this workshop, I had the strong impression that nurses mainly assist doctors. However, I learned that nursing is a very important profession that involves caring for each patient individually and providing gentle, compassionate support even when doctors are not present. I was also amazed by how much knowledge nurses have.
This workshop strengthened my desire to help others by being there for patients. I also became more interested in using tools such as stethoscopes to check patients’ conditions. I really enjoyed learning through hands-on activities. I hope to use this valuable experience as motivation as I work toward my future goals and dreams.
Thank you very much to the guest speakers for providing us with such a valuable learning opportunity.
2.
When I actually tried chest compressions, I realized that they required much more physical strength than I had imagined. I gained even greater respect for nurses, who perform these procedures while working to save patients’ lives.
I also thought it was wonderful that nursing requires not only knowledge and technical skills but also compassion for patients. I realized that healthcare professionals, including nurses, play an essential role in supporting people’s lives, and that our everyday sense of security is made possible by their dedication.
Through this experience, I was able to learn more deeply about nursing. The workshop was truly informative. Thank you very much! I would love to hear from you again if there is another opportunity.
3.
I was unsure about my future career path, but this workshop broadened my perspective and helped me think more deeply about my options. I learned about the roles of nurses and the various career opportunities available after passing the national nursing examination, which helped me appreciate the depth and diversity of the profession.
The two guest speakers were very engaging and shared their knowledge through stories from their own experiences. This helped me understand not only the challenges of nursing but also the rewards of the job and the care and dedication nurses have for their patients.
I hope to make use of what I learned in this workshop as I continue to consider my future career.
4.
Through this workshop, I was able to learn more about the work of nurses. By participating in hands-on activities, I realized that nursing requires not only medical knowledge and technical skills but also the ability to empathize with patients and communicate effectively.
I was particularly impressed by the speakers’ comment that resilience is important. I realized that becoming a nurse requires a great deal of effort, and that even after becoming one, nurses need to maintain a strong sense of purpose and personal values. This helped me understand once again the great responsibility involved in a profession that deals with human lives.
It was a valuable opportunity to learn about aspects of nursing that I would not normally have the chance to experience. Thank you very much.
5.
I had never seriously considered nursing as a career for myself, nor had I had many opportunities to think deeply about the profession. However, I was interested in gaining new perspectives and knowledge, so I decided to participate in this workshop. After listening to the speakers, I realized how many things I had not known or even considered before, and I felt that my perspective had broadened.
The workshop helped me better understand the educational pathways to becoming a nurse. I was able to compare the career I hope to pursue with the different pathways and qualifications required for nursing, gaining useful information to help me think about my own future.
I was also very interested to learn about the wide range of nursing specializations. I discovered that nursing involves many different roles and areas of expertise, and I was impressed by the high level of specialization within the profession.
The hands-on activities, including learning how to perform BLS and using a stethoscope, were also extremely valuable experiences.
6.
As I learned about the responsibilities of nurses, I began to worry whether I would be capable of doing this kind of work. However, the speakers kindly and warmly encouraged me with words such as, “You’ll be fine” and “You can definitely become a nurse.” Their encouragement helped me think more positively about my future.
They also said, “We’ll be waiting for you at the hospital,” which helped me imagine myself as a nurse in the future and motivated me to work hard toward that goal.
7.
I learned that there are many different roles in healthcare besides nursing, which made me even more interested in the medical field. The speakers also explained the functions of different hospital wards and rooms in detail, helping me gain a lot of knowledge about hospitals in an easy-to-understand way.
I feel that this experience had a significant impact on the range of career options I am considering for my future.
