Riho Otsu, a Grade 12 student at GKA, participated in Gunma Prefecture’s Reverse Mentoring program last year. Through this initiative, high school students serve as advisors to the governor, offering advice and policy recommendations from a young person’s perspective.
Riho’s journey into international cooperation began with a work experience placement at the JICA Takasaki Branch when she was in Grade 8. Since then, she has been involved in various international cooperation activities for four years.
As part of this project, Riho led the call for musical instrument donations at GKA, working alongside Grade 9 students Hina Tamura and Tsukino Tatsumi. With advice from a teacher who had previously served as a JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteer, they reached out to the school community. Thanks to the generous support of students and their families, a total of 65 musical instruments were collected.
In February next year, 100 musical instruments collected across Gunma Prefecture are scheduled to be delivered to the project sites of JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers in El Salvador. A peace lecture is also planned to be held in Gunma Prefecture.
This initiative is a wonderful example of how GKA students build on a single experience to deepen their learning and take meaningful action. We hope our students will continue to value each learning opportunity and use it as a starting point for further growth.
